Paul van Kemenade

PAUL VAN KEMENADE - altosax, 1957 Rotterdam/the Netherlands.
My professional career began in 1976 by starting my own bands, playing my own compositions, while studying at the Brabants conservatory in Tilburg, Holland. I worked as a sideman in a lot of bands and played in several duo's,trio's, as well as in larger groups and big bands, e.g. Niko Langenhuijsen's Vaalbleek, duo van Rossum/van Kemenade, Palinckx & Palinckx, de Orkaan ( with a.oHan Bennink,Sean Bergin ), the Alex von Schlippenbach 's Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra ( with a.o. Kenny Wheeler, Ed Thigpen, Benny Bailey ,Gerd Dudek, Aki Takase ), the Surinam Music Ensemble, several dance-projects as well as projects with performers, poets and painters and played in a lot of ad hoc ensembles. For a few years I was co-leader of the workshop orchestra de "Boventoon" and conducted the workshoporchestra "Brabants Leerorkest" for 5 years. During 10 years I tought throughout the country over 600 workshops.
I started my own quintet in 1983. In 1984 I received the 'Podiumprize' of the SJIN (the Dutch Jazz Foundation). At the time I'm playing in: the Paul van Kemenade quintet and septet, the Podium trio ( Wierbos-Kuiper-van Kemenade ) occasionally with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Cornell Rochester, Willem van Manen's Contraband, the Eric van der Westen octet, occasionally with Pulsation ( with a.o. Christoph Haberer, Michael Heupel ), 1-2-3-4-5-Sextet ( with a.o.Mattias Nadolny, Gunnar Plümer ), with Jacques and Bert Palinckx, with Jasper van 't Hof, with Spanish and electronic music and as a soloist in a lot of different bands. I still give workshops in Tilburg, where I've been living now since 1974. I've cooperated on 30 records.

Mijn professionele carrière begon in 1976 toen ik aan het Brabants conservatorium in Tilburg studeerde, met het opstarten van eigen groepen en eigen composities. Ik heb als sideman in veel bands gespeeld, van duo's tot big bands zoals: duo van Rossum/van Kemenade, Niko Langenhuisen's Vaalbleek, Palinckx & Palinckx, de Orkaan met o.a.Han Bennink en Sean Bergin, Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra o.l.v. Alex von Schlippenbach met o.a. Kenny Wheeler, Ed Thigpen, Aki Takase, Benny Bailey en Gerd Dudek, The Surinam Music Ensemble, e.a. Ik heb muzikale medewerking verleend bij diverse dansprojecten alsmede samenwerking met performers, dichters en schilders en speelde in verschillende ad hoc ensembles.
Een aantal jaren was ik co-leader van het workshoporkest de Boventoon en leidde 5 jaar het Brabants Leerorkest. Gedurende 10 jaar heb ik verspreid over het land meer dan 600 workshops gegeven. Mijn quintet be- staat sinds 1983. In 1984 heb ik de Podiumprijs van de Stich- ting Jazz In Nederland ontvangen. Op dit moment speel ik in o.a. het Paul van Kemenade quintet en septet, het Podium trio met Jan Kuiper en Wolter Wierbos, soms aangevuld met Jamaala- deen Tacuma en Cornell Rochester, de Contraband o.l.v. Willem van Manen, het Eric van der Westen octet, soms met Pulsation met daarin o.a. Christoph Haberer en Michael Heupel, het 1-2-3-4-5-sextet met o.a. Matthias Nadolny en Gunnar Plümer, soms met Jacques en Bert Palinckx, met Jasper van 't Hof, met Spaanse en electronische muziek en als solist in verschillende groepen. Ik geef nog steeds workshops in Tilburg, waar ik sinds 1974 woon. Ik heb meegewerkt aan zo'n 30 LP's en CD's.
